Type 1 Diabetes is also known as juvenile onset diabetes. It accounts for approximately 5% of all diabetes diagnoses. Type 1 diabetics do not produce their own insulin and must rely on other sources to provide it. Without insulin, the body cannot utilize any glucose including the glucose it receives from the foods that are consumed. Without glucose, there is no energy and without energy, the patient can become ill. With today's advancements in technology, doctors can effectively treat Type 1 diabetes that gives their young patients the opportunity to live long and very productive lives. With the use of insulin and other treatment methods, diabetes can be effectively controlled and managed.
Type 2 Diabetes is known to be associated with "insulin resistance." With this particular form of diabetes, the body does not recognize nor does it effectively utilize the insulin it produces. While the pancreas still continues to produce insulin, over the years it will gradually stop as it recognizes that what it is doing is not working efficiently. Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes must test their blood sugar to ensure that it does not reach harmful levels. A delicate balance must be maintained between blood sugar and insulin if the patient is to remain healthy and active. Patients must regularly check their blood to ensure proper levels are being maintained.
Many people are under the mistaken assumption that losing weight will cure or at least help to reduce the severity of their diabetes. Although losing weight will make it much easier to maintain the proper balance between blood sugar and insulin, it will not cure the disease nor will it reverse any damage that has been caused by the condition. Diabetes can, however, be managed and treated so that the patient can live as normal and healthy a life as possible. It is important to work hand in hand with an endocrinologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of both types of diabetes.
